What It Takes to Learn How to Read Sheet Music

Here are a few rules for reading sheet music. When learning how to read musical notes a person must know some of the rules.

Every piece of music is divided into measures and each measure contains a certain number of beets. For instance if your music has 4/4 next to the clef, this indicates that there are four beats per measure. knowing this before you begin to practice a song will let you know how many notes are allowed in a measure.  For example, if you had a whole note in your 4/4 music, then you would need to hold that note out for the whole four counts. Each note, whether it is a whole note, half note, etc, is held for the correct number of counts allowed on the particular music sheet.

Also, when learning to read sheet music a person needs to recognise rests, which can also take up a part or all the measure. A whole rest, showed by a symbol that looks like an upside down hat, takes up the time of an entire measure. Each type of rest is indicated by different symbols and is held for the appropriate amount of time. You must also be able to recognize the clef the song is written in, what the key signature is and whether or not there are any flats or sharps in the song before you can begin to read and play the sheet music correctly.

These general rules apply no matter if you are learning music for guitar, piano, drums or any other instrument so, get the basics first.
